An official said that over 6.5 lakh consumers have already been upgraded to prepaid smart meters. “The DISCOMs are implementing centrally sponsored schemes (CSS) such as PMDP and RDSS for the installation of smart metering projects in J&K.”

He said, “Projects under PMDP stand completed, whereas meter installation under RDSS is currently under execution. This is expected to be completed by 31 March 2026 in Jammu and by August 2026 in Kashmir.”

As part of the PMDP initiative, more than 6.5 lakh consumers have already been migrated to prepaid smart meters in Jammu and Kashmir.

Under the RDSS scheme, it is anticipated that around 14.48 lakh prepaid smart meters will be installed across the Union Territory.

Regarding tariffs and charges, the official said, “The DISCOMs charge electricity bills as per the tariff issued by the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC).”

He further said, “The electricity charges for rural and urban areas are the same, as per the tariff order. Unmetered consumers are billed on a flat-rate basis, determined by sanctioned or agreement load according to the applicable slab for unmetered consumers.” (KNO)
