Over 66.92 Lakh People in Jammu Kashmir Receive Free Food Grains Under NFSA

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has stated that 66.92 lakh beneficiaries across 18.99 lakh families in the Union Territory are covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and are eligible to receive free food grains every month. The scheme ensures that every Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) household receives 35 kg of food grains, while other beneficiaries receive their entitlements as prescribed under NFSA.

Officials have confirmed that the distribution of free food grains aligns with the government’s commitment to ensuring food security for vulnerable populations. The scheme is aimed at providing essential support to low-income households, reducing the financial burden of procuring food, and ensuring nutritional stability.

While the current allocation under NFSA remains in place, the government has also been considering the issue of providing additional free food grains to eligible sections. However, no formal decision has been announced regarding any extension or expansion of the existing scheme beyond NFSA entitlements.

The Public Distribution System (PDS) in Jammu and Kashmir plays a crucial role in the disbursement of food grains, with the Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs overseeing the implementation. Officials have reiterated that efforts are being made to streamline the distribution process, enhance accessibility, and ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive their due rations without delays.

The government’s food security initiatives have been particularly significant in addressing economic challenges faced by many households, especially in rural and economically weaker sections of society. While concerns have been raised about expanding food entitlements further, officials have stated that any such measures would depend on policy decisions at both the central and UT levels.

As discussions continue over additional food support, the government has assured that all existing NFSA entitlements will be delivered effectively, reinforcing its commitment to social welfare and food security in Jammu and Kashmir.
