The total apple production in Jammu and Kashmir stood at 18.57 lakh metric tonnes in 2023-24, compared to 27.21 lakh metric tonnes in 2022-23 and 23.41 lakh metric tonnes in 2021-22. While production has seen fluctuations, the government has maintained that horticulture remains a key sector for the region’s economy. Officials have attributed variations in yield to weather conditions and shifting market dynamics, but they assert that ongoing interventions will ensure stability and growth in the sector.

To enhance the apple trade, the government has developed a network of 24 fruit and vegetable mandis across Jammu and Kashmir, with 13 more at different stages of development. These mandis play a crucial role in facilitating the sale of surplus apple produce to markets across the country. Additionally, 17 mandis have been integrated with the e-NAM (National Agricultural Market) portal, enabling electronic transactions. In 2024-25, e-NAM trade volumes have so far reached 9,43,464.20 quintals, generating a turnover of Rs 594.17 crore. Over 50,000 farmers and traders are registered on the platform, providing them with direct access to buyers.

In an effort to expand market reach, the government has been organising buyer-seller meets in key cities such as Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jammu, and Srinagar. These events aim to connect local apple growers with large-scale buyers, improving visibility and demand for Kashmiri apples in domestic markets. Officials have stated that such initiatives will help ensure better prices for farmers and increase their profitability.

Besides, the government has emphasised that it is working to modernise the apple industry through infrastructure upgrades and better market linkages. The introduction of cold storage facilities, improved packaging techniques, and grading standards are among the measures being taken to enhance the quality and shelf life of apples. These steps, officials say, will help Kashmiri apples compete more effectively in national and international markets.

Despite these efforts, apple growers have often voiced concerns over issues such as transport costs, competition from imported apples, and unpredictable weather conditions.
