Jammu and Kashmir PDP-BJP Government on Saturday informed the J&K Legislative Assembly that the elections to Panchayats will be held in 2016 only.

Responding to the issue raised by Opposition, Panchayat Minister, Ab Haq Khan, said, “the elections to Panchayats will be held only this year.”

National Conference Kangan lawmaker, Mian Altaf, raised this issue and said, “the term of Panchs and Sarpanchs is completing in July this year. So, when is government holding the elections to the third tier of governing system?”

Altaf alleged that the Panchayati Raj system was “not working properly”. “Your Maha Sabhas and other offices are not working properly,” he told the government.

If Panchayat elections are held this year, Jammu and Kashmir will also be holding election to Islamabad assembly constituency on June 22 wherefrom Chief Minister Ms Mehbooba Mufti will be seeking mandate. She is a sitting Parliamentarian from South Kashmir. The Islamabad assembly seat fell vacant with the demise of former CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
