SRINAGAR: Paras Health Srinagar has successfully performed an advanced Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)-guided drainage procedure for a patient with a large walled-off pancreatic necrosis (WON), while the hospital’s Gastroenterology unit has also crossed the milestone of performing more than 600 EUS procedures, the hospital said on Saturday.
According to Paras Health Srinagar, the patient had developed a 19×12 cm walled-off pancreatic necrosis following an episode of severe pancreatitis. The condition was treated using a HOT-AXIOS stent through a completely endoscopic, minimally invasive procedure performed under minimal sedation, avoiding the need for open surgery.
The hospital said such cases are traditionally managed through surgery or image-guided percutaneous drainage at many healthcare centres. It added that the EUS-guided approach offered a minimally invasive alternative aimed at reducing recovery time and patient discomfort.
Dr Aadil Ashraf, Associate Director, Gastroenterology, Paras Health Srinagar, said the procedure reflected the increasing availability of advanced therapeutic endoscopy in Kashmir.
“The patient had developed a large walled-off pancreatic necrosis measuring 19×12 cm following pancreatitis. Using Endoscopic Ultrasound guidance, we successfully drained the collection with a HOT-AXIOS stent through a completely endoscopic approach under minimal sedation. Advanced therapeutic endoscopy offers a safer, minimally invasive alternative with faster recovery and less discomfort for patients,” Dr Ashraf said.
He said the Gastroenterology unit has been regularly performing advanced EUS-guided therapeutic procedures, helping reduce the need for invasive surgery in patients with complex pancreatic and biliary disorders.
Dr Ashraf said the department has now completed more than 600 Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) procedures, describing it as one of the highest procedural volumes in the region. He also said Paras Health Srinagar is the largest procurer of Boston Scientific EUS hardware in Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting the volume and complexity of advanced endoscopic interventions carried out at the hospital.
