SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Department (JKPDD) is planning to install smart meters in over 40,000 Distribution Transformers (DTs) in the Kashmir area.

JKPDD Principal Secretary H Rajesh Prasad said, “JKPDD is all set to replace nearly 9,000 DTs that have turned obsolete or are out-aged.”

Prasad added, “The department is going to install smart meters in all 40,000 plus DTs functioning in the Kashmir region so that we have a complete chain from feeder meter to DT meter to consumer meter.”

He said that the department aims to measure the energy right from the source to make it more accountable.

“KPDCL currently operates approximately 40,000 Distribution Transformers (DTs).  Additionally, there are proposed plans to add 9,000 DTs under the RDSS. Among these DTs, 10,000 are to have smart meters installed under the PMDP, while the remaining DTs covered under RDSS,” reads an official document.

It also states that the primary objective of implementing smart meters at the DT level is to enable accurate energy accounting and monitoring.

The Principal Secretary said, “The 10,000 DTs under PMDP have not been started yet because it is being covered under RDSS of which tendering has been done and installation have been initiated.”—(KNO)
