National Conference on Thursday condemned the chain of events in South Kashmir leading to death of an innocent youth in Pulwama and a grenade blast outside a Masjid in Shopian that injured 11 people. The party Provincial Spokesperson for valley while expressing grief over the incidents said, “never before has such an incident been reported in Kashmir. Attack on Nimazis is cowardice of the highest order and that responsible need to be exposed and punished. Every cadre and leader of the party feels the pain this incident has caused to the victims and Kashmiri people.”

The Spokesperson, according to a party statement, said that situation in South Kashmir was going from bad to worse. “The wonton arrests of youngsters, slapping of PSAs, night raids, exploitative frisking and checking going on in villages and towns of Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Islamabad give a feeling of déjà vu.”

“It is like the violence and tyranny at the hands of security and secret agencies is being re-enacted. There is an atmosphere of fear, uncertainty and suspicion and its effects are written on every face here,” the spokesperson said.

He said that it is “no co-incidence that this chain of events is happening at a time when people in Kashmir are fed up with the present coalition government”. “The situation in South Kashmir is a direct physical manifestation of the back-stabbing that PDP government has committed on Kashmiris by allying with the right-wing BJP.”

Ever since the ‘unholy alliance’ took place, people have lost faith that they had reposed in PDP which had lured people to vote for them on the promise to keep BJP at bay from coming to power in J&K. “Where are those who vehemently claimed that it was only Mufti Sayeed who could stop BJP from assuming power? They are silent and seem to be enjoying the corridors of power. Their talk of bringing change and protecting people of Kashmir from vicious and nefarious parties like BJP was nothing but a farce,” the statement said.

He further said that South Kashmir was being targeted by “scrupulous elements and who-so-ever these are, wish to push the youth to the brink”. “Their sole aim is to demonise the innocent youth and their aspirations for a safe and secure future of Kashmir and by implementing the draconian measures in Kashmir, they are but demeaning their education, understanding and intelligence,” he said.
