Demanding immediate release of all political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday termed the prolonged incarceration of the detained politicians in Jammu and Kashmir as unjustified and uncalled for, said the spokesman.

According to the party spokesman, a high-level meeting of the PDP leaders was held in party’s Jammu as well as in Srinagar headquarters wherein the participants took stock of the arrangements being taken to observe the 4th death anniversary of PDP founder and former chief minister on January 7, next year.

In Jammu, the meeting was presided over by PDP General Secretary and former MLC Surinder Chowdhary who pitched for the release of the detained political leaders, stating that such a prolonged incarceration is deeply perturbing for any democratic setup and that the government of India must contemplate that such an action is not helping it in any way in restoration of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir, he said.

A unanimous resolution was also passed during the meeting in which participants underlined the need of setting the political leaders including the PDP President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti free without any further delay, said the spokesman.

Highlighting the role of the PDP in making the peace initiatives successful in the erstwhile state, Chowdhary said that the party has always been in the forefront in making hectic and earnest efforts for the prevalence of peace in Jammu and Kashmir. He added that the detention of the political leaders has created a void in erstwhile state’s political landscape, leaving masses deeply disturbed and skeptic of the government’s future initiatives for peace and development.

The PDP General Secretary also empathized for the greater participation of party workers for January 7 function so that a clear message is sent out to those corridors which are waiting in wings to undermine PDP’s relevance in Jammu and Kashmir’s political spectrum.

According to the PDP spokesman, a similar meeting was held at PDP’s Srinagar head office in which party leaders and activists expressed concern over the detention of the political leadership, terming such an action unwarranted, unjustified and unfavourable for all the peace efforts and confidence-building measures that have been taken in the past.   They also held detained discussions over the preparations being made to ensure hassle-free participation of the PDP supporters, workers and general masses in January 7th function. Congregational Fateha Khawani is scheduled to be held in Dara Shakoh Park, Bijbherara on that date.

The participants also raised concerns over the paucity of essential services in Kashmir valley amid the present winter chill, terming the government’s inefficacy in addressing the crises deeply disturbing. The PDP leaders have urged the dispensation to pay heed to peoples sufferings at an earliest and provide them the amenities they deserve and have been craving for.
