SRINAGAR: In order to connect the Line of Control (LoC) with the rail link, Northern Railway is going to commence aerial and ground investigations for extending the railway line from Baramulla to the border town of Uri, shortly.

The Indian Express reported that the Northern Railway has got an alignment permission report from the concerned organization for the 50-kilometer Baramulla to Uri train link. The train currently travels 135.5 kilometers connecting Banihal to Baramulla.

The aerial, drone, and ground survey of the 50 km long Baramulla-Uri train link will begin as soon as the report (alignment approval) is issued and the airborne and ground survey will begin quickly, it said.

Baramulla, Sheeri, Gantmulla, Boniyar, Limber, Nougram, Lagama, and Uri town among other places will be traversed by the new railway line running from Baramulla to Uri.

According to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the train network in Kashmir will be expanded up to the Chinese border. He made the announcement during a visit to Jammu and Kashmir in March of this year. The connectedness of the local populace would enhance with the extension of the train link up to the Uri border region.

Apart from making travel hassle free, the move would promote trade and business as Uri and other border regions have been made tourist-friendly by the authorities following an improvement in the situation on the ground, express reported.
