Abrar Ahmad (not his real name) took a pledge not to consume drugs or indulge in illegal trade ever in his life.

A Kupwar resident, Ahmad (23) booked on charges of peddling drugs and pushing youths into an illicit trade to earn quick bucks was released from jail last week nearly two months after arrest.

He was among at least 45 alleged drug peddlers booked by police in this north Kashmir district so far this year – highest during recent years in its crackdown against drug abuse, according to police.

“After serving detention, I realized drugs can only ruin lives of youth. I have committed never to resort to this illegal trade ever in life”, he told Kashmir Wire.

“I appeal my friends and youths to stay away from this menace. Indeed the jail tern helped me realise the ill affects of drugs and shun the wrong path”, he added.

In a major crackdown against drug abuse in this district, police so far this year has recovered drugs and psychotropic substances valued at millions of rupees in the international market.

“The drug peddlers booked so far include four notorious peddlers, who smuggled narcotics from across the line of control in border town Karnah”, Shamsher Hussain, Kupwara superintendent of Police told Kashmir Wire.

“Under the able supervision of Director General of Police S P Vaid, we are committed to eradicate the drug abuse from the society, which is one of the commandants of Jammu and Kashmir police in current year”, he added.

The district police chief appealed parents and youth to come forward and support the police in eradicating the menace and save youths from ruining their lives.

Police Thursday claimed to have nabbed five notorious drug peddlers from different areas of the distinct and recovered two kilograms of charas and three bottles of liquor from their possession.

According to police figures, drugs and psychotropic substances including 24 kilograms of charas, two kilograms of heroin and 4.5 kgs of brown sugar have been recovered from the accused so far this year.

In addition, a large quantity of banned drugs including codeine and proxoyan have also been recovered from drug peddlers.
