SRINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted Wagoov, Kashmir’s traditional handwoven reed mat, during the 136th episode of his monthly Mann Ki Baat programme, praising the efforts of a Srinagar family in reviving the fading craft and urging people to support local artisans.
Speaking about India’s rich handicraft traditions, Modi described Wagoov as a centuries-old Kashmiri craft woven from Sarkand (reed) and paddy straw. He said the mats are handcrafted after the reeds are harvested, dried in the sun and woven by hand, with two artisans taking nearly four days to complete a single piece.
Calling Wagoov an eco-friendly product, the Prime Minister said the traditional mats help keep homes cool during summers and warm in winters. He noted that while Wagoov was once found in almost every household in Kashmir, its use had declined over the years.
Modi singled out Ghulam Hussain of Srinagar and his daughter Tanzeela, saying the father-daughter duo had taken up the task of giving a new lease of life to the traditional craft despite facing numerous challenges. Their efforts, he said, encouraged more people to take up the craft and received support at the local level, helping Wagoov reach markets beyond Jammu and Kashmir.
Expressing appreciation for the artisans associated with the initiative, the Prime Minister reiterated his call to promote indigenous products under the “Vocal for Local” campaign. He also appealed to people across the country to bring Kashmir’s traditional Wagoov into their homes and support local craftsmanship.
