SRINAGAR: Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar has directed all deputy commissioners to immediately seal and keep out of use school buildings rendered unsafe by recent heavy rains until they are repaired and declared structurally fit, as the administration intensified relief and restoration efforts across the division.
The directions were issued during a review meeting to assess rain-related damage, restoration work and relief measures in all districts of the Jammu division, an official spokesperson said.
Stressing that student safety must remain the top priority, Kumar instructed district authorities to identify vulnerable school buildings without delay and prevent their use until repairs are completed.
The Divisional Commissioner also directed the Managing Director of the Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited to restore damaged electricity infrastructure on priority to normalise power supply in affected areas at the earliest.
With the Meteorological Department forecasting more rain on July 29 and 30, Kumar directed district administrations to stock essential commodities, including foodgrains, LPG cylinders and other daily necessities, to prevent supply disruptions. He also instructed the Health Department to maintain adequate stocks of medicines and deploy sufficient medical personnel in vulnerable areas.
The Divisional Commissioner further ordered the immediate restoration of roads blocked by landslides, shooting stones and other rain-related damage. He also directed departments concerned to undertake urgent desilting of drains and water channels to minimise waterlogging during future rainfall.
Kumar instructed officials to keep continuous watch on water levels in rivers, streams and nallahs across the division and to issue timely warnings to residents if the situation deteriorates.
