Announcing the decision on social media, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the government had also approved the renaming of Raj Bhavan and Raj Niwas to Lok Bhavan and Lok Niwas respectively.

Shah described the move as a “significant milestone” in India’s efforts to build a developed and “superior” nation anchored in public service and good governance. He said the Modi government, in office for 11 years, had prioritised service over power, adding that the Prime Minister views himself as a Pradhan Sewak who works “24×7” for citizens.

Further details on the implementation of the new nomenclature are awaited from the Centre.
