Police Arrests Seven Drug Peddlers, Contraband Recovered

   

SRINAGAR: Police in Jammu and Kashmir have arrested seven drug peddlers across Kulgam, Baramulla, Anantnag, and Awantipora, recovering significant quantities of contraband substances. A notorious drug peddler has also been detained under the PIT-NDPS Act in Kupwara.

In Kulgam, police at a checkpoint in Chawalgam apprehended Mashooq Ahmad Hilla of Vesbatpota and recovered 2 kilograms of poppy straw from his possession.

In Baramulla, a checkpoint at Janbazpora led to the arrest of Aijaz Ahmad Sofi of Chakloo, who was found with 288 banned capsules.

In Anantnag, Ab Rehman Mir of Sirhama was caught on the Sirhama link road carrying 1.270 kilograms of cannabis powder. Separately, a raid in Mattan led to the seizure of 5 kilograms of charas powder from the residence of Javid Ahmad Padder of Pethnambal.

In Awantipora, three individuals—Owais Gull, Tariq Ah Sheikh, and Mushtaq Ah Mir—were intercepted at Galander Crossing with 8.160 kilograms of ground poppy straw. Their vehicle, a scooty, was seized.

Meanwhile, in Kupwara, a habitual drug trafficker, Mohd Shafi Sheikh alias Shafi Tractor, was detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT-NDPS), 1988. Sheikh, implicated in multiple cases of drug trafficking, has been lodged in District Jail Udhampur following a detention warrant issued by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir.

Police have registered cases under relevant laws at respective stations and initiated further investigations. The public is encouraged to report drug-related activities by contacting the nearest police station or dialling 112.
