The FIR was registered at Tral police station under Sections 420 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), they said.

As the alleged offence took place in 2022, the case has been registered under the IPC, which was replaced by the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) in July 2024, officials said.

According to the complaint, Shah allegedly took money from the complainant on the pretext of helping him with a matter involving the police.

Shah, who was appointed vice president of the Pulwama Kisan Morcha in November last year, has faced eight similar cases registered at at least four police stations in the district since 2016, officials said.

The latest FIR is the third case registered against him this year.

The development comes a week after police registered an FIR against BJP Pulwama district president Showkat Gayoor on August 11 for alleged extortion and threats. The BJP has since suspended Gayoor from all party positions pending disciplinary proceedings.

BJP leader Altaf Thakur, who also hails from the Tral area, declined to comment on the latest case against Shah.
