SRINAGAR: Police on Wednesday busted an alleged fake recruitment racket after 30 to 35 candidates appeared for a purported written examination for Group C posts at a private examination centre in the Satwari area of Jammu.
The examination, conducted in two shifts through a computer-based test (CBT) at Rani Bagh, was allegedly linked to a wider network operating across the country by advertising fake vacancies through a spoofed website domain impersonating the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India.
The alleged fraud came to light after one of the candidates became suspicious about the recruitment process and approached the police.
Acting on the complaint, a team from Satwari Police Station reached the examination centre in the presence of a Naib Tehsildar and halted the examination.
During preliminary questioning, the organisers reportedly told the police that they had received an email directing them to conduct the examination and claimed they were not involved in the alleged fraud.
The candidates, meanwhile, informed officials that each had paid Rs 275 as an examination fee to participate in the test.
Officials said similar examinations had reportedly been organised at other locations across the country, suggesting that the alleged racket could have wider links.
Police have registered an FIR under relevant sections of law at Satwari Police Station under FIR No. 338/2026.
A police official said the investigation into the alleged use of a spoofed government domain would be transferred to the Cyber Cell of Jammu and Kashmir Police to trace those involved in the recruitment fraud.
