Terming the allegations that police lobbed teargas shells inside the Jamia Masjid as baseless, Director General Police K Rajendra Saturday said police is investigating all the angles to know who is behind the stone pelting in old city and other parts of the valley.

“The allegations are baseless. Police have not lobbed any teargas shell inside the Jamia Masjid. It is a misinformation. Yes I can tell you that in order to disperse the stone pelters police were compelled to fire some teargas shots on the road side,” the DGP told KNS over phone.

He said Police is investigating all the angels to know who is behind the stone pelting in old city and other parts of the valley.

“We are investigation all the angles who is behind the stone pelting. I have already said that most of the stone pelters are minors. We will identify them and counsel them. We will also call their parents. I hope police will soon control the stone pelting,” the DGP said.

He also said that Hurriyat (g) chairperson Syed Ali Geelani is a “free man” and police only take him under preventive custody when it receive reports that the situation could be disrupted.

When asked that Geelani has been saying that police were not allowing him to move out from his Hyderpora residence and is preventing him from offering Friday prayers, Rajendra said, “Geelani is a free man unless he disturbs the law and order situation. Geelani is free to offer Friday prayers but the only thing is that whenever he goes out from his residence for Prayers the stone pelting starts there. But I can say that he is free to offer prayers.”

The DGP added that police only takes Geelani under preventive custody when “we receive reports that the situation could be disrupted.”

“We never stop him to go for hospital for treatment and no authority in the country can prevent him from following his religious duties but he should not instigate the youth for violence or stone pelting,” he added.
