MLA Langate, and Awami Ittehaad Party (AIP) president, Er Rashid was among dozens arrested when they tried to march towards Mazar-e-Shuhda, at Naqashband Sahab, Srinagar on Saturday.

AIP had called for a march to Mazar-e-Shuhda to pay homage to the martyrs of 1931.

Hundreds of  workers and leaders of AIP including the president started their march from Rajbagh area but they were stopped by police to move forward.

When the protesters resisted, police swung into action and arrested more than twenty people including the president Er Rashid, general secretary Nazir Ahmad Malik, spokesman, Shawkat Ahmad Nadvi, Aadil Hussain, Tanveer Hussain khan and others.

AIP, spokesman told Kashmir Life that 24 four people of the party were detained in police station Rajbagh.

Pertinently, the authorities have imposed stringent restrictions in Srinagar to prevent people from marching towards the Martyrs’ Graveyard at Naqshband Sahib.

Martyrs day is being observed every year on July 13, in Jammu and Kashmir to commemorate those killed by the autocratic Dogra rulers in 1931.

Heavy contingents of police and para military troops have been deployed in Srinagar and other towns of the valley while all roads leading to Naqashband Sahib have been sealed.

The authorities have placed the top separatist leaders under house arrest to prevent them visiting the Mazar-e-Shuhda. They include Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Mohammad Yasin Malik and Shabir Ahmad Shah, while as Syed Ali Geelani is under house arrest from last five months.
