SRINAGAR

The authorities have imposed stringent restrictions in Srinagar to prevent people from marching towards the Martyrs’ Graveyard at Naqshband Sahib on the call of separatists. Meanwhile a complete shutdown is being observed on Saturday. The strike call has been given by all the separatist leaders.

Martyrs day is being observed every year on July 13, in Jammu and Kashmir to commemorate those killed by the autocratic Dogra rulers in 1931.

Heavy contingents of police and para military troops have been deployed in Srinagar and other towns of the valley while all roads leading to Naqashband Sahib have been sealed.

The authorities have placed the top separatist leaders under house arrest to prevent them visiting the Mazar-e-Shuhda. The said leaders had called for a march to Mazar-e-Shuhda.

All the shops and business establishments are closed. Government and semi-government offices, educational institutions and banks are also closed in view of a public holiday.

All the main roads give a deserted look as public and private transport is off the roads.

It was on this day in 1931 when the Dogra troops shot dead around 22 Kashmiris, one after the other, outside the Central Jail in Srinagar. They had gathered in the jail premises to attend the court proceedings against one, Abdul Qadeer, who had asked the Kashmiri people to defy Dogra rule.
