Police Personnel Killed After Militants Open Fire in South Kashmir

   

SRINAGAR: A Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel was killed after militants opened fire on security forces during a cordon and search operation in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag district on Wednesday, officials said.

A senior police official said the operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of militants in the area.

Acting on the information, teams of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Special Operations Group (SOG) and other security forces reached the locality and launched a cordon and search operation. During the operation, the hiding militants opened indiscriminate fire on the security personnel, triggering a brief exchange of gunfire.

During the initial exchange of fire, police personnel Ashiq Hussain sustained critical injuries. He was shifted to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, the official said.

The operation was continuing when this report was filed, with additional reinforcements rushed to the area to strengthen the cordon and prevent the militants from escaping.

Senior security officials are closely monitoring the situation, while the area remains under a tight security cordon. A thorough search operation is underway.

Police said a detailed statement will be issued after the conclusion of the operation.
