Police Wednesday registered FIR against Territorial Army for illegally smuggling timber in Kupwara district. However the two vehicles seized by police were released after the intervention of top Army brass.1011748_339276402865810_1357545693_n

According to police sources of a local news agency, CNS, troops of TA 160th battalion had illegally cut some green conifer trees in dense forest cover of Kupwara. After receiving the information Police party intercepted the two Army vehicles at Heeri and without giving them any room seized both the vehicles loaded with illegal timber.

A police official told CNS on condition of anonymity that one of the TA units had been planning to smuggle about 300 cubic feet of timber from Zirhama to the battalion headquarters of Heeri.

At 11.00 pm the police party intercepted the TA convoy and forced it to halt. Two feeder trucks, bearing numbers 07C0812484 and 08C0832124 were seized after these were found with smuggled timber.

Sources said though Army unit used all ways and means to scare police party with shouting and warning but did not open fire as the police party put up a barrier with two bulletproof Rakhshak vehicles.

Sources told CNS that all efforts of Commanding Officer of the battalion who personally came to the spot after a while failed to get the seized trucks released.

A police officer on condition of anonymity said that police registered a case vide FIR number 115/2013 under section 17, 9 RPC and 6 Forest Act. He said after the intervention of Army top brass police released both the seized vehicles.
