SRINAGAR

Police Sunday rejected the reports about the resurgence of militancy in Kashmir, saying that it was false that more and more educated youth were taking up guns in Valley.

“There is nothing like that,” Inspector General of Police for Kashmir Range Javaid Mujtaba Geelani told KNS, when asked whether educated youth were getting inclined towards militancy.

He said that whenever any input about a militant presence is received, immediate action is taken to neutralise them. “Police and other security agencies are well prepared to handle any situation and we are taking appropriate measures to ensure peaceful situation in Valley,” he said.

Asked whether recent encounters in parts of valley and the militant attacks like the one on a telecom shop in Srinagar have made police jittery ahead of August 15 function, Mujtaba said, “No there are no worries. We have taken all precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incident. And whatever inputs we have, we try to address them on priority.”

The IGP said that adequate arrangements are in place for the smooth and peaceful conduct of August 15 functions to be held in Bakshi Stadium Srinagar and other venues at district headquarters.
