SRINAGAR: Police on Wednesday restricted traffic on several roads leading to the BJP headquarters in Jawahar Nagar, Srinagar, ahead of a proposed National Conference protest outside the party office.
Security personnel have been deployed in large numbers across Jawahar Nagar, Raj Bagh, Wazir Bagh and adjoining areas as authorities stepped up security arrangements.
Vehicles approaching Jawahar Nagar were stopped at several points and prevented from moving towards the BJP headquarters, affecting traffic on connecting roads in the surrounding residential and commercial areas.
The restrictions were imposed ahead of the National Conference’s call for a peaceful gherao of BJP headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu over demands including restoration of statehood and constitutional safeguards for Jammu and Kashmir.
The BJP has also announced a protest, with both parties’ programmes expected to increase political activity in Srinagar.
The police deployment and traffic restrictions are intended to prevent any confrontation and maintain law and order around the BJP office and nearby areas.
