SRINAGAR: Railway authorities in Jammu division detected 8,106 cases of ticketless and irregular travel during a month-long checking drive and collected fines totalling Rs 56,46,615, officials said.
The drive targeted passengers travelling without valid tickets, undertaking irregular journeys or carrying excess unbooked luggage, with officials saying the exercise was aimed at curbing such violations and promoting awareness about proper ticketing.
Ticket checks were conducted at major stations across the division, including Jammu, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan, Kathua, Pathankot Cantt, Budgam and Srinagar. Checks were also carried out on Mail, Express and special trains passing through the division.
Officials said the enforcement exercise was intended not only to recover penalties but also to ensure safe, smooth and comfortable journeys for passengers.
Railway authorities appealed to passengers to travel with valid tickets and cooperate with checking staff during inspections.
