SRINAGAR: In a detailed statement on the gun battles in two Shopian villages, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said they mowed down the militant who had killed the street vendor in Lal Bazar. The encounter took place in the twin Shopian villages Tulran and Feeripora in which five militants were killed.

The police identified the vendor killer as Mukhtar Shah. The vendor, Varinder Paswan was from Bhagalpur in Bihar.

Giving details, the spokesman said that at around 1800hrs on Monday, they got information about militant presence Tulran and Feeripora on basis of which Police along with 34RR and CRPF launched a joint cordon and search operation.

During the search operation at Tulran, the spokesman said they gave repeated opportunities for militants to surrender. Instead of surrendering, they fired upon the joint search party indiscriminately and it triggered the encounter. “However due to darkness the operation was suspended, while the cordon was kept intact,” the spokesman said, adding it resumed early morning during which they were again asked to surrender.

After the encounter, the bodies of three militants were retrieved who were identified as Danish Hussain Dar resident of Ray Kapren Shopian, Yawar Hussain Naikoo resident of Pahlipora and Mukhtar Ahmed Shah resident of Sindbal, Ganderbal.

As per police records, the slain militants, the spokesman said were linked with proscribed LeT (TRF) outfit and remained part of groups involved in several terror crime cases including attacks on security establishments and civilian atrocities. “It is pertinent to mention that killed terrorist Mukhtar Shah was involved in target killing of a non-local vendor in Lal Bazar area of Srinagar and shifted to Shopian after committing the crime,” the spokesman said.

About the encounter in the neighbouring Feeripora village, the spokesman said contact was established at about 1000hrs. The hiding militants quickly resorted to firing and it started an encounter.

After the encounter was over, the bodies of two slain militants were retrieved who were identified as Ubaid Ahmad Dar resident of Ray Kapren and Khubaib Ahmad Nengroo resident of Braripora. The spokesman said they both belonged to LeT.
