SRINAGAR

Amid complete shutdown in Kangan town Thursday against the Power Development Department (PDD), shops and other business establishments are closed while public transport is off the roads.

Residents of the area staged protests and blocked Srinagar-Leh highway against the authorities for their failure in providing electricity according to curtailment schedule in the town.

To mention Kangan is the only area in J&K with three power houses including 15 MW USHP- 1st Sumbal, 105 MWT UHSP-2nd Kangan and 15MWT power-house Ganderbal within an area of 18 kilometres.

A resident said it is strange that we are not provided a regular supply of electricity despite housing three power stations.

“Successive regimes promised to supply us electricity from a local power house after installation of 20 MW transformer near switchyard Kangan but more than three years have passed, the promise is yet to be fulfilled. This has forced us to come on roads.”

The residents have appealed power minister and Chief engineer PDD to look into the matter.
