SRINAGAR: The power crisis in Jammu and Kashmir continues to deteriorate, with consumers enduring prolonged daytime power cuts. Authorities assert that discussions are in progress and anticipate improvements in the near future.

Local consumers, however, informed KNO that the power situation has deteriorated throughout the valley. They receive only 4-5 hours of electricity daily, despite the installation of smart meters in nearly half of Srinagar city, promising round-the-clock power supply.

These disgruntled consumers, in both metered and non-metered areas, have endured erratic power supply for over two weeks, causing significant hardships.

“We had hoped for an improved power situation after the installation of smart meters and the expansion of power infrastructure over the past four years. Unfortunately, the situation has worsened just before the onset of winter in Kashmir,” lamented the consumers.

Meanwhile, Chief Engineer, Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Javed Yousuf Dar, informed KNO that the government is exploring solutions to address the power shortage in J&K.

“We are in discussions with NTPC and other entities to secure additional electricity for the people in J&K. We anticipate receiving extra electricity in the coming days, which will aid in resolving the current electricity situation,” he stated.

However, he acknowledged that he was not aware of the substantial debt incurred from external electricity purchases.

When questioned about the current electricity situation, the Chief Engineer, KPDCL, attributed the problem to low precipitation in recent months, resulting in reduced water levels in reservoirs, affecting power generation at major power plants.

“We are actively addressing the issue, and we expect it to be resolved within a few days,” he assured. (KNO)
