Amid heavy protests “in solidarity” with Pulwama people, intense clashes took place in North Kashmir’s volatile Palhallan town.

Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani had called for protests “in solidarity with the people of Pulwama”. Pulwama town is hut for last 16 days demanding permission for installing ‘Martyrs Memorial’ in the Shaheed Park. Geelani has praised their “steadfastness and relentless sacrifices” on account of financial losses in last over two weeks.

Reports reaching here said that clashes are on between forces and youth in Bhat Mohalla and Naik Mohalla areas of Palhallan.

According to witnesses, “soon after the Friday prayers people thronged streets of Palhallan and staged massive protests on the call of Hurriyat octogenarian Geelani in solidarity with the people of Pulwama.”

However, police swung in to action and tried to disperse the protestors, who started pelting stones on police and paramilitary forces.

Police resorted to heavy tear gas shelling on the protestors, locals said.

Clashes were going on when this report was being filed.

Meanwhile, a protest demonstration was also held in main chowk Hyderpora to sympathise with the people of Pulwama.

The protest was led by Hurriyat (g) activists.

In a statement, DPM said that it organized a protest demonstration in Ganderbal o express solidarity with the people of Pulwama.
