SRINAGAR: A cop was arrested and his weapon seized after a civilian got killed when his service rifle went off in a misfire in Pulwama district on Wednesday, police said.

According to police said that 25-year-old Asif Ahmad son of Mohammad Ayub Padroo a resident of Poterwaal Shopian was hit by the bullet at a check point at Haal in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district after the rifle of the security personnel accidentally went off at around 10 am.

“Today while on duty at Haal #Pulwama, rifle of a Policeman accidentally went off resulting in injuries to a person. The injured person was immediately evacuated to the hospital by Police(sic) ,” ADGP Kashmir said in a tweet.

Ahmad was rushed to nearby hospital and then to tertiary care institution, Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital in Srinagar where he succumbed.

He said that a case has been registered and the Policeman was arrested.

He added that further investigation in the case is going on.

Former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said “an overcautious and paranoid security apparatus” on Union home minister Amit Shah’s visit to Kashmir for the incident.

“As if the harsh measures put in place causing grave inconvenience to the people in Kashmir weren’t enough, Asif from Pulwama paid with his life in the name of ensuring security for HM’s visit. My heart goes out to his family,” Mehbooba tweeted.

Former chief minister Omar Abdullah said that there must be a swift, credible and transparent probe in to this killing.

“The killing of an unarmed civilian in an “accidental fire” incident in Pulwama district is highly condemnable. There must be a swift, credible & transparent probe in to this death. Those responsible must be punished to the fullest extent possible,” Omar said in a tweet.
