SRINAGAR

Dozens of adjoining areas of Awantipora in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district observed a complete shutdown in remembrance of Hizbul Mujhadeen militant Wasim Yousuf Dar resident of Digripora who was killed in a gunfight with Army near Beighpora Awantipora on Tuesday evening.

All the shops and business establishments remained closed where transport was off the roads of Beighpora, Malangpora, Digripora and Gulzarpora.

The father of the deceased Hiz militant Muhammd Yousuf Dar told CNS that Wasim was very intelligent and he had come off with flying colours in his class 12th examination. “He was studying at Government Higher Secondary School Panzgam. In March 2012, he suddenly went missing and we came to know through Army and Police which raided our house several times that he has joined militant ranks,” Dar said.

Hundreds of people amid pro-freedom slogans participated in Wasim Yousuf Dar’s last rites. The Nimaz-i-Jinazah (Funeral Prayers) was offered by District President Tahreek-i-Hurriyat Ghulam Mohi-u-Din Andrabi at local Martyrs grave yard in Dagripora.

Soon after the funeral prayers,Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani in his telephonic address to mourners said that sacrifices laid down by youth like Wasim have always infused new spirit and life in the ongoing movement. Geelani extended his condolence to the bereaved families and paid glowing tributes to the slain militant. He said, “For these unprecedented sacrifices all of us owe a debt to these slain militants.”

He said that the sacrifices offered by our youth demand our commitment to the movement that it would be taken to its logical end. Though the Government of India is employing the arbitrary measures to muzzle our voices and the people in spite of all this are striving to achieve freedom from New Delhi’s control,” said Geelani adding that India is propagating waywardness and immorality to deviate youth from the ongoing freedom movement.

Meanwhile, a police handout said that during cordon and search operation conducted by Awantipora Police and security forces at village Beighpora, falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Awantipora, a militant fired upon the search party. In retaliation one Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant identified as Waseem Ahmad Dar son of Mohammad Yousuf Dar resident of Dogripora, Pulwama was killed. One AK56 rifle, four AK magazines, one pouch, one Chinese grenade, 60 AK rounds and one civil belt were recovered from his possession.
