Kashmir police chief Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gillani while commenting over the killing of two civilians on Sunday afternoon in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district said one has died due to the shell injury while the young girl was hit by a bullet during a “cross fire”.

Two persons — identified as Shaista Hamid, 25, daughter of Abdul Hamid, a resident of Lalhaar village, and Danish Farooq Mir, 24, the son of Farooq Ahmad, a resident of Ratnipora village — died of gunshot injuries during the protests that followed an encounter between forces and suspected militants.

Talking to KNS, IGP Gilani said that as per the initial inputs, Danish Rashid has been hit by a shell while Shaista received a bullet injury. He said a case has been registered and the situation is being monitored.

As per the latest reports, at least 10 other protesting civilians sustained gunshot wounds and other injuries after the police lobbed tear-smoke shells. All 10 were rushed to Srinagar for advanced treatment.

The clashes erupted at Astan Mohalla early this afternoon when protesters and forces engaged in clashes, even as the gunfight between forces and militants was raging on in the area.

The militant killed has been identified as Adil Wagay, a Pulwama resident. (KNS)
