Punjab Resident Arrested With Suspected Heroin Near Navyug Tunnel

   

SRINAGAR: Police have arrested a Punjab resident after allegedly recovering around 60 grams of a heroin-like substance from a vehicle during naka checking near the Navyug Tunnel on the National Highway, officials said on Friday.

The vehicle, an Alto K10 bearing temporary registration number JK01C-0049T, was stopped by a naka party from Police Station Qazigund during routine checking.

Police said a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a polythene bag containing approximately 60 grams of the suspected substance from a passenger seated in the front.

The passenger was identified as Sikandar Singh, son of Vasakha Singh, a resident of Moga, Punjab, and was taken into custody.

Police registered FIR No. 20/2026 under Sections 8/21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at Police Station Qazigund following the recovery.

Officials said the investigation would examine the source and intended destination of the suspected contraband and determine whether other individuals were involved in the alleged trafficking network.

Further action will be taken on the basis of the findings and evidence gathered during the investigation, police said.

Kulgam Police said it was intensifying efforts against drug trafficking and the illegal distribution of narcotic substances in the district and appealed to the public to share information with law-enforcement agencies about the transportation, sale or distribution of illegal drugs.
