SRINAGAR: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast scattered light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir over the next 24 hours, with fairly widespread to widespread precipitation likely during the following two days.
According to the weather bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre, Srinagar, at 11 am on Sunday, scattered light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected across Jammu and Kashmir from 8:30 am on August 30 to 8:30 am on August 31.
The weather is likely to become more widespread on August 31 and September 1, with the IMD forecasting widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms over J&K.
The forecast for the seven-day period from August 30 to September 5 indicates isolated to fairly widespread rainfall activity in Kashmir, while Jammu is likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rain during the first three days, followed by scattered rainfall activity.
For August 30, isolated rain is forecast in Kashmir and fairly widespread activity in Jammu. On August 31, fairly widespread rain is expected in Kashmir and widespread rain in Jammu. Widespread rain is forecast in both divisions on September 1.
The weather activity is expected to reduce thereafter, with fairly widespread rain in Kashmir on September 2 and isolated activity from September 3 to 5. In Jammu, fairly widespread rain is forecast on September 2, followed by scattered activity on September 3, 4 and 5.
The IMD has also issued weather warnings for parts of the Union Territory during the period.
In Kashmir division, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph are likely on August 31 and September 1.
In Jammu division, isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are forecast on August 30. Isolated heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are expected on August 31 and September 1, with a possibility of landslides, mudslides and flash floods at vulnerable places.
The weather office has also forecast isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph in Jammu division on September 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Meanwhile, maximum temperatures during the past 24 hours remained 3-5 degrees Celsius above normal at many places in Kashmir division and 1-2 degrees above normal at many places in Jammu division.
Kupwara recorded the highest maximum temperature in Kashmir at 34.2 degrees Celsius, while Kathua recorded 35.4 degrees Celsius in Jammu division.
Night temperatures also remained above normal, with minimum temperatures 2-5 degrees Celsius above normal at many places in Kashmir and 1-4 degrees above normal at many places in Jammu.
Gulmarg recorded the lowest minimum temperature in Kashmir at 14 degrees Celsius, while Bhaderwah recorded 18 degrees Celsius in Jammu division.
Scattered light to moderate precipitation was recorded during the period, with Kathua AWS receiving the highest rainfall of 23 mm.
For Monday, August 31, the IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies with light rain or thunderstorms in Srinagar, with temperatures likely to hover around 30 degrees Celsius during the day and 22 degrees Celsius at night.
Jammu is likely to receive light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, with a maximum temperature of around 34 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 28 degrees Celsius.
Muzaffarabad is also expected to receive light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, with temperatures around 32 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius, respectively. Mirpur is likely to have partly cloudy skies, with a maximum of 33 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 27 degrees Celsius.
The IMD has advised people to remain alert and updated about weather developments, particularly in areas vulnerable to landslides, mudslides and flash floods.
