SRINAGAR

Amid religious fervour, the Islamic Holy Month of Ramadhan would begin from tomorrow – Friday – in Jammu and Kashmir.

Ramadhan is the ninth month of Islamic Calendar known as ‘Hijri’ where in it is obligatory or ‘Fardh’ on adult Muslims to abandon food and liquid from Sehri (pre-dawn meals) till Iftar (sunset).

Although the ‘Taraweeh’ or night prayers would begin from tonight but fasting would commence from tomorrow. All the preparations have been done by mosque and shrine committees to accommodate large number of worshippers.

Muslims on fast must refrain from eating, smoking, drinking and engaging in sexual relations with one’s spouse. The fasting in Kashmir — this year — would last for about 15 to 16 hours a day.

Fasting in Ramadhan is one of the five Pillars of Islam and the Holy Book of Muslims – the Quran – was also first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in this month over 1400 years ago.

People were seen thronging City markets for buying dates and liquids. This year, people in Kashmir are fortunate enough as the weather in Valley has remained pleasant so far, and has not witnessed intense heat.
