SRINAGAR: Kashmiri journalist Aasif Sultan was re-arrested on Thursday in connection with an old case of unlawful activities filed by Srinagar district police, where he was named as an accused, as reported by ETV Bharat.
Around 78 days after the Jammu and Kashmir High Court quashed the detention order against Asif Sultan under the Public Safety Act, he finally walked out of the Ambedkar Nagar district jail in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.
He was released after more than five years of incarceration – first in a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Ranbir Penal Code, and then under the PSA.
However, the award-winning journalist was apprehended shortly after being brought to his home in Batamaloo locality of Srinagar. Sultan was initially summoned by the Batamaloo Police Station and later taken into custody by the Rainawari Police Station.
Sultan’s ordeal traces back to August 27, 2018, when he was initially arrested on charges of providing logistical support to the banned militant group Hizbul Mujahideen. Initially detained under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), additional charges under the PSA were later imposed.
