SRINAGAR: Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Saturday said revoking Article 370 and reducing the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir was an extremely sad decision and the Congress Party will relook into this issue.

According to reports published in various newspapers, speaking in Club House chat, Digvijaya Singh said, “Democracy was not there in Kashmir. When they revoked Article 370 then Insaniyat was not there because they had put everyone behind bars. Kashmiriyat is something that is basically the fundamentals of secularism. Because in a Muslim majority state, there was a Hindu Raja and both were together. Kashmiri Pundits were given reservations in Kashmir in government services. So therefore the decision of revoking Article 370 and reducing the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir is an extremely sad decision. And the Congress Party would certainly have to have a relook into this issue.”

The decision to revoke Article 370 was taken on August 5, 2019, by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government.

Digvijay was responding to Shahzeb Jillani, a Pakistan-based journalist currently residing in Germany who had that he was shocked at the changing landscape of politics and Indian society under the Modi regime. He alleged that post revocation of Article 370, the relationship between India and Pakistan have strained. He also added that in the last couple of months the media is speaking up against the Narendra Modi government.

Meanwhile, the opposition leaders condemned Singh’s statement and BJP’s Amit Malviya said, “This is what Pakistan wants.” Shandilya Giriraj Singh, BJP Karyakarta tweeted, “Digvijay Singh conveyed Rahul Gandhi’s message to Pakistan. Congress will help Pakistan in grabbing Kashmir.”

Responding to the opposition’s claims, Digvijay said, “Illiterates cannot understand the difference between shall and consider.”
