Expressing its reservations over the suggestion of PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti of constructing of railway tracks in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, All Parties Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani Wednesday said that this proposal will collectively prove a very ‘disastrous’ for the Kashmir region.

“The recent destructive floods of September 2014 have proven that the construction of railway tracks in these areas will be a futile exercise and it can have more negative impacts than benefits and this exercise can have very serious impacts over the fragile environment of Sonamarg and Pahalgam like health resorts,” a Hurriyat (G) statement said.

Hurriyat statement said that for the development and prosperity of any region, the construction and making of roads and rail lines is although a very essential condition but keeping in view the fragile and delicate atmosphere of the Kashmir, the construction of roads instead of railway tracks can prove better.

The statement said, “the huge rush of the tourists at the health resorts of Kashmir have already given birth to the numerous problems and issues and according to the experts, if this rush is not checked and a discipline is not followed in this regard, it can adversely affect the beauty of these places.”

Spokesman further said that the reports of experts received after the recent devastating floods in Kashmir are very alarming and it should be seriously taken and a detailed discussion should be held on these reports so that a future plan is made to deal with these kinds of situations.
