SRINAGAR: Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said that the Rohigiya Muslims who have come to India are not refugees but the ‘illegal immigrants.’

“We need to understand the reality that Rohingyas from Myanmar who have entered India are not refugees,” Singh told a seminar on National Seminar on Good Governance, Development and Human Rights. “In order to get the refugee status, one needs to follow a process. None among them has followed that procedure.”

There are 40000 Rohigiya Muslims in India who fled their country after the mass crackdown started in 2012.

Pertinent to mention here the Rohigiyas are considered as ‘national security threat.’ The supreme court of India has given the October 3, date for the hearing on the Rohigiya issue.

Some of the refugee families are in Jammu and quite a few have moved to Srinagar in recent days. They are restive over the stand of the government that they will be deported.
