SRINAGAR: Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Saturday criticised the heavy deployment of security personnel in Delhi to prevent protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar, warning that such restrictions did not reflect well on democracy.
In a post on X, Mehdi said the measures were familiar to people from Kashmir but cautioned against allowing similar restrictions to spread across the country.
The protest, called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revision and voter registration.
Delhi Police detained more than 3,000 protesters attempting to reach Jantar Mantar, while several opposition leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, were also detained.
