SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Education Department will examine a proposal to introduce a five-day working week in schools, with Saturdays and Sundays as weekly holidays, Education Minister Sakeena Itoo has said.
The proposal was put forward by Pampore MLA Hasnain Masoodi, who said students spend long hours studying and are left exhausted by the end of the day.
Masoodi said the existing school schedule can place excessive demands on children and suggested that students should have both Saturday and Sunday off each week.
Responding to the proposal, Itoo said the matter would be taken up with the concerned education authorities for examination.
She said the Directorates of School Education Kashmir and Jammu would assess the proposed model and examine the feasibility of implementing it on the ground.
Itoo said the proposal would be implemented only if the model was found suitable for the education sector.
