The emergency notification, sent through Saudi Arabia’s national alert system, urged residents to follow official safety instructions. However, it did not specify the nature of the potential danger.
In a separate security advisory issued on Monday, October 12, the US Mission warned of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions following reported attacks targeting airports in Saudi Arabia. It urged American citizens to exercise extreme caution when travelling through major airports across the Kingdom.
The warnings come amid reported attacks attributed to Yemen’s Houthi movement targeting Saudi airports, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. According to Reuters, operations at the capital’s airport have been suspended, with the closure extended until October 17 to facilitate safety and operational checks.
The US Mission has also said American government employees must obtain special authorisation before using airports in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, reflecting the security restrictions affecting air travel.
The US State Department, in a travel advisory updated on October 10, placed Saudi Arabia at Level 3, advising American citizens to reconsider travel to the country because of risks associated with drone and missile attacks, armed conflict and terrorism. It separately advised against travel to areas along Saudi Arabia’s border with Yemen.
Saudi Arabia’s National Early Warning Platform is designed to deliver emergency notifications to mobile phones and alert the public to potential threats, including hostile attacks and other emergencies.
Residents and visitors have been urged to comply with instructions from Saudi authorities and monitor official announcements for further updates as the security situation develops.
