SRINAGAR: JKNC Vice-President Omar Abdullah, in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments regarding the scheduling of assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasised that the Supreme Court has already mandated that the polls must be held before September 30, and it is a compulsion for the Centre to comply.

He told reporters that as the Supreme Court has ordered elections to take place before September 30, it is essential for the government to comply with this ruling.

Regarding PM Modi’s assurance of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah questioned the rationale behind the revocation of statehood and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act. He highlighted the lack of clarity from the central government on this matter.

In a significant announcement made during an election rally in Udhampur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the imminent restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, alongside the promise of conducting Assembly polls soon. Addressing a campaign rally, Modi expressed his vision for a transformed Jammu and Kashmir, emphasising the empowerment of its residents through democratic representation.
