SRINAGAR: A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck eastern Türkiye on Wednesday morning, hitting the Battalgazi district of Malatya province, according to emergency services.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said the tremor occurred at around 9 a.m. at a depth of 7 kilometres (4.3 miles). No immediate reports of damage or casualties were confirmed.
Television footage showed schools being evacuated and residents gathering outside buildings as a precaution following the quake.
In 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake killed more than 53,000 people across Türkiye and caused widespread destruction in 11 southern and south-eastern provinces.
