This internship is tailored for current SDB trainee members—graduate students who have already joined a lab for their dissertation research or postdoctoral fellows. It aims to help young scientists communicate developmental biology to wider audiences through structured writing projects and expert mentorship. Between September 2025 and May 2026, selected interns will complete three key assignments: a profile of an SDB member, a feature on an SDB awardee, and a story highlighting a recent scientific discovery in developmental biology. All articles will be published on the SDB website and may also appear in the society’s official journal, Developmental Biology.

Each intern will receive $500 in support to attend the SDB Annual Meeting. The position requires a commitment of 5 to 10 hours per month and offers a flexible schedule coordinated with mentors. Interns will regularly interact with members of the SDB Communication Team and receive guidance from an experienced group of SciComm mentors including Cecilia Moens, Ondine Cleaver, Pamela Hines, Jessica Feldman, and Douglas Houston.

Applicants must submit a completed application form, a cover letter of no more than 500 words outlining their interest in the programme and its relevance to their career goals, a curriculum vitae of up to three pages, and a letter of recommendation from their research advisor. The advisor’s letter must also acknowledge support for the trainee’s participation if selected, and should be sent directly to Marsha Lucas at sdb@sdbonline.org. All application components, including the recommendation letter, must be submitted by the August 15 deadline.

A selection panel comprising the SciComm mentors will review applications, and successful candidates will be notified by email by September 5, 2025. Those selected must formally accept the offer within 48 hours of notification.

Questions regarding the application process can be addressed to Marsha Lucas at sdb@sdbonline.org.
