SRINAGAR: Security was stepped up across Kashmir ahead of Diwali, with additional checkpoints, intensified vehicle searches and increased deployment of personnel along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway amid concerns over possible attempts to disrupt peace during the festive period.
In south Kashmir, security arrangements were reinforced at vulnerable locations along NH-44, including Vessu, Alstop, Mir Bazar and Khudwani.
Police intensified vehicle checking, frisking of passengers and surveillance at sensitive locations and entry and exit points along the highway. Additional checkpoints and round-the-clock patrolling were also put in place.
In Srinagar, additional personnel were deployed at several locations, with vehicles subjected to checking and frisking. Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel and other security forces were also stationed at sensitive locations, markets and highways.
Meanwhile, Army troops deployed along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri and Poonch districts have intensified surveillance and security measures following intelligence inputs suggesting possible infiltration attempts by terrorists and efforts to disturb peace during the festive season.
A senior police official said the arrangements were aimed at ensuring peaceful celebrations and the safe movement of commuters and residents. People were urged to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activity.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha extended Diwali greetings to the people, wishing them happiness, peace and prosperity.
