Police on Saturday arrested seven persons including six brothers in connection with the attack on Congress activist’s house that left one dead and another seriously injured at Seeloo Sopore on Friday late evening.

Official sources said that seven persons have been arrested during intervening night of June 20/21 from Mundgi area of Sopore in connection with the attack.

Sources identified the arrested persons as Lateef Ahmad Khan son of Ghulam Mohi-ul-din Khan and six brothers Mehraj-ud-Din Khan alias Raja Khan, Firdous Ahmad, Imtiyaz Ahmad, Abid Ahmad, Ishfaq Ahmad and Ayoub Ahmad sons of Sardar Khan, all residents of Takikhan Mundgi Sopore.

Around 9:00 pm on Friday Nazir Ahmad Naikoo son of Khazir Mohammad was killed and his cousin brother Shabir Ahmad Naikoo injured when the masked gunmen barged inside the house and fired indiscriminately.

Meanwhile, confirming the arrests, Deputy Inspector General Of Police North Kashmir, Ghulam Hassan Bhat said that a Pakistani and a local militant were involved in the attack.

DIG said that in February last year, a militant Mohammad Shafi of Zaloora was killed near the residence of Khazir Mohammad Naikoo and the attackers tried to pass-off the incident as the revenge which is actually not the case.

“There was a dispute between the two families and the incident related to it only”, DIG added.

Meanwhile, Congress vice Block President, Khazir Mohammad Naikoo on Saturday said that he recognizes one of the three attackers who killed his son at Seeloo Sopore on Friday evening.

“I was in the kitchen along with the family members when three masked gunmen barged inside. All of a sudden they started indiscriminate firing leaving my son dead on spot and injuries to one of our relative Shabir Ahmad”, Khazir Mohammad Naikoo said.

He said that while the gunmen were fleeing, mask of one of them fell down and I immediately recognized him as Raja Khan (Mehrajudin Khan).

The congress leader said that Raja Khan is a resident of Mundgi Sopore and is related to my brother being his brother-in-law.

Asked whether the incident was related to political rivalry or there was some family dispute involved, Khazir said, primarily it is related to political rivalry and at the same time one cannot rule out the family dispute.

At the same time of incident, Khazir said he was hiding beneath a counter in the kitchen.

Khazir Mohammad further said that a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) is pending before a court in Baramulla after the same family attacked our family 3-years ago over a land dispute. (GNS)
