SRINAGAR: The Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) in Jammu and Kashmir has improved from 936 in 2014-15 to 957 in 2025-26 (provisional) following the expansion of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme, the Union Government informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Responding to an unstarred question by MP Sat Paul Sharma, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur said the scheme has evolved into a nationwide movement aimed at addressing child sex ratio and promoting the empowerment of girls and women through behavioural and social change.
The government also said the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of girls at the secondary level in Jammu and Kashmir increased from 62.03 per cent in 2014-15 to 68.8 per cent in 2025-26, according to data from the Ministry of Education’s Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE).
The minister said that during the 15th Finance Commission period, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao was expanded to cover all districts across the country under the SAMBAL vertical of Mission Shakti, with a focus on multi-sectoral interventions and greater expenditure on activities that deliver measurable outcomes on the ground.
As a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, BBBP provides 100 per cent financial assistance from the Centre, while implementation is carried out by State Governments and Union Territory administrations. Funds are released through the Single Nodal Agency (SNA) mechanism under the Public Financial Management System (PFMS).
According to the government, Jammu and Kashmir received Rs 305 lakh under the scheme in 2024-25 and utilised Rs 579.10 lakh, with the higher expenditure attributed to the utilisation of unspent balances carried forward from previous years. In 2025-26, the Union Territory was allocated Rs 250.67 lakh and utilised the entire amount.
