The Srinagar Jammu highway remained closed for the second consecutive day in wake of heavy snowfall and landslides. More than 450 vehicles have also been left stranded on the road.

While appealing people to adhere to the cut off timings while travelling on highway from Srinagar to Jammu and vice versa, Inspector General of Traffic said that the road was closed for vehicular traffic due to heavy snowfall and landslides. He said over 450 vehicles were stranded on the road, “But luckily no passenger vehicle is stranded”, he added.

“Landslides at seven places on highway have rendered vehicular traffic unable to move. Landslides in Doda district has also occurred. Work is in process to clear the road to pave way for traffic movement”, IG Traffic Muneer Khan told a local news agency, KNS.

He said that subject to the weather conditions, the road will open for the stranded traffic from Jammu to Srinagar on Sunday.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Manzoor Ahmad said the area falling within his jurisdiction has been cleared for the movement of traffic. “Area falling within my jurisdiction is clear. Road from Qazigund to tunnel has been also cleared. But I’m not aware about the road condition in the other range”, the officer said.
