SRINAGAR

The authorities closed Srinagar-Jammu Highway after eight people were reportedly killed and several others injured when Border Security Forces (BSF) opened fire to disperse demonstrators.

The demonstrators alleged that security forces entered a local mosque at Gool in Ramban district and beat up Imam and other Nimazees.

Traffic police officials said for precautionary measures all Jammu bound vehicles have been stopped at Qazigund.

They said traffic will be allowed only when the situation becomes normal and a green signal is received from traffic and police officials present in the area.

However, official sources said thousands of people took to streets and blocked the highway at Ramban, demanding immediate action against the BSF men who stormed the mosque Wednesday evening.
