As the strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway opened after remaining closed for three days, five persons were killed and three other injured when a passenger vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the highway and fell into a deep gorge at Ramban on Thursday.

Reports said that a Tata Sumo vehicle was on its way to Srinagar from Jammu when the driver lost control on it and it skidded the highway.

The highway was re-opened today for one-way traffic after landslides caused by rainfall forced its closure on Monday.

According to official sources the tragic accident took place near Shaitani Nallah.

They added that five passengers were killed on the spot and three were critically injured.

Reports said that all the passengers on the vehicle were non local labourers who were on way to Srinagar.
